Third Annual Ski Trip

So as not to repeat myself I'll just report on resorts we had not previously visited.  Also most of the pictures taken this trip was taken inside the car as we were driving.  The scenery was beautiful and it kept Rene busy.

We started at Bridger Bowl outside Bozeman MT. We really like Bridger Bowl and this year there was plenty of snow there.  And we love the town of Bozeman and the really neat bars and restaurants there. Then on to Whitefish, MT.  Whitefish is a lovely town.  Last year we stayed at the Lodge at Whitefish and loved it.  But this year there was no availability so we stayed at a new hotel down town.  It was very nice also and everything was in walking distance.  The problem with Whitefish is the fog.  We skiied the first day but the next day was very foggy with light rain.  People that we talked with that had skiied that day that they were covered in ice from the misting rain.  Doesn't sound like fun to us.  Since snow conditions at most US resorts are at a thirty year low we headed for Canada, land of the Australian guest worker.

Banff, Canada

When we first arrived we drove directly to the ski area.  They do have condos etc there but very little else to do.  We stopped at the info desk and the guy there said that he would suggest that we stay in Banff Village, which was about a 40 minute drive from the ski area.  They do have a bus that picks up and returns the skiers to the village.

So we stayed in Banff a very cozy ski town with three world class ski resorts close by.

We skied two; Lake Lousie and Sunshine.  The conditions were excellent and we enjoyed the town.

Interestingly about 80% of the people we met (hotel clerks, bar tenders, ski resort workers, waiters, filling station attendants. etc.) were guest worker from outside of Canada. Most were Australian mixed with a few Brits thrown in the mix.

We thought the bus ride may be inconvenient but it was the opposite.  Picked us up practically at the front door of our hotel and dropped us off at the ski area.  No driving, parking, no hassel.

Our Australian sailing friends tell us that this is the right of passage for young Aussies.  They get a two year work visa and leave Australia for worlds new to them.  We skied on Australian Day and the mountain was full of the Australian flags worn as capes.

One quick food review.  We ate at the bar one night because the wait for a table was 45 minutes.  We ordered a salad and pizza.  When the pizza came the bartender offered us honey and a spice red pepper oil to mix on the plate to dip the pizza in, as a condiment.  Delicious! In fact, we went back again.  We haven't had pizza at home since we have returned but you can believe we will have the honey and pepper oil ready.  You should definitely try it.

Ketchum, ID

Sun Valley previously visited in 2016. Each year we tend to visit Sun Valley because it is beautiful and is a wonderful place to ski.  Wide open runs.  And because it has such a terrific salad bar that we fill up before we leave the resort.  Fresh salmon, steak, chicken, tuna, and so many cheeses and vegetables to choose from.

Sandy, Utah

Skied Alta for two days. Still one of the best ski resort in the US.

Glenwood Springs, CO

Checked out the hot springs and skied Snowmass where, for the first time during this trip, it was bright and sunny.  Usually while in Glenwood Springs we try to ski Sunlight but this time because of the lack of snow it was only open on the weekend with just a couple of lifts open.  We decided to skip.

Telluride CO

Didn't make it this year.  We buy a Mountain Pass ticket which allows you to ski a couple of days at about 10 or so resorts.  Telluride was one of the resorts that we could ski "free" but it was also about a five hour drive to get there.  Also a blast of cold air was forming so we knew it would be really cold skiing conditions.  But what the heck, we've got the cold weather gear, let's do it.  So we started calling around for rooms only to find out that they were almost completly sold out within a 40 mile radius of the resort.  We could get a room for the Friday nite but nothing for the weekend.  So we decided to skip (for this year).

So next year we are looking forward to "ski-in ski-out" at one location eliminating the driving and equipment hassle.

Maybe Japan?
